IBM PC Portable

IBM XT

Some time after the launch of the IBM PC, Compaq came out with their portable PC, which led the market. IBM reacted by bringing out the 5155 Portable PC, which is a fairly standard XT in a portable format. My example has:

  • One 360k 5.25" floppy drive
  • 20MB hard drive, with PC-DOS 3.30 installed.
  • Fold-down keyboard with buckling spring clicky keys..

The Portable PC has a standard XT motherboard with 512kB RAM. My PC has a 128kB add-on board but it is faulty so machine boots with 512kB. PC has a CGA graphics card, which feeds an internal 9" amber monochrome display. An external colour monitor can be plugged in if needed.
